Ford Probe Electronic Distributor Failure Symptoms

Ford Probe (V6 and 4 cylinder) and Mazda cars fitted with Mazda V6 engines use the Mitsubishi Electric electronic distributor which contains both pick ups and ignition coil drive electronics. This distributor has a very high failure rate but can now be re-engineered by Probe distributors using more robust and higher rated components which survive the adverse events which are causing current failures.

SYMPTOMS

2) There can be a history of intermittent breakdown - car starts and runs OK but cuts out when hot. Restarts OK when engine begins to cool down.


3) Intermittent failure to start from cold (but car runs ok once started) MAY be security system failure. See below for instuctions

Please send in the entire distributor assembly should be dispatched to us. This should be packed in a strong cardboard box with adequate packaging. If the rotor is seized in place do not try to force off - please leave it us to remove as we have the right tools. ALSO mark position of distributor body with scratch mark before removal. This allows precise ignition timing when refitting distributor and avoids future visit to garage to have timing fine tuned.

FORD PROBE IMMOBILISER FAULT

Vehicles suffer from premature failure or the ignition distributor.

Invariably the fault is associated with failure of the internal ignition module. The reason for this problem is a design fault in the Ford immobiliser system.

We have found away around this, it is advisable to remove the ignition immobiliser wires 10& 13 and join these together thus bypassing the immobiliser system. You still have to press the button on the key fob to start the car.

The immobiliser is fitted behind a panel by the clutch pedal; it is held in place by one screw and one pushpin clip, remove these. You will see a metal cage held by two rivets to the floor. Remove. Go to passengers sides repeat (sometimes two bolts) remove immobiliser from cage. With the multi plug facing you with the wires coming out towards you, turn so the six wires are at the top cut 10&13 join together with good quality connector. Refit immobiliser.

If fitting early distributor to later car reverse outer wires on three-pin plug to distributor.
